NU-PHOUND NATION is the name of a rhythm section that forms the backbone of Parliament-Funkadelic.The band was formed as a creative outlet for the    West Coast-based members   of the frequently touring   mega-funk orchestra led by maestro George  Clinton. This is not a mutiny on   the Mothership. When George Clinton calls,   the tours and recording are their top priority. In those idle moments in  between, the musicians saw a need for another creative outlet; though on a much smaller scale. The trio   consists of: drummer, Franky “Kash” Waddy, six-string bassist Lige Curry and guitarist Dewayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight.  All are  well-seasoned veterans of the PFunk thang and are all based in southern  cali.

Franky Waddy is the senior of the group, dating back to pre-James Brown era of bands with Wiliam “Bootsy” Collins. Collins was a major factor in developing James Brown’s JB sound of the late 60s. Kash was the drummer in Bootsy’s Pacesetters, which backed up James Brown on Ohio dates in the late 60s. When Bootsy was offered the James Brown gig, he brought over his entire band and they metamorphosed into the JBs. The association lasted until 1971 when a new Collins band, the House Guests, was being wooed by associates in George Clinton’s  Parliament- Funkadelic organization. Franky played drums in Funkadelic and in a third Collins’ band The Strangers, before being signed to Warners Brothers as part of Bootsy’s Rubber Band in 1974. Franky can be heard on seminal funk masterpieces like Stretchin’Out In Bootsy’s Rubber Band , Ahh…The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! and Bootsy? Player of The Year . In ’78, Kash went over to George Clinton’s camp and also worked on a number of side projects, with spinoffs The Horny Horns, Brides of Funkenstein and Sly Fox before settling on a permanent association with Clinton’s PFunk All Stars.  -commentary by cmtalley.

Lige Curry got his start with Funkadelic on the One Nation album. A master of the six-string bass, he began by leading off cheers and chants in the live PFunk shows. When the tune calls for a hard-rock shredder’s mentality, Lige is deep “in da pocket” raising the decibel levels. Transplanted from the East Cost, Lige is deeply involved in other projects like his own recordings , PFunk compadre Michael “Clip” Payne’s 420 Funk Mob and recording and touring with Starr Cullars .

Dewayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight has worked in bands led by Herbie Hancock, Charles Tolliver and had a brief stint in Red Hot Chili Peppers. Normally a rhythm guitar player, he’s featured as a lead guitarist on. BAlckbyrd is also the the music director for Parliament-Funkadelic.
